March 5 Finally settled in Merida..
AFter a lazy start we down our usual breakfast of a big plate of fresh fruits (watermelon, melon, banana, papaya) eggs whichever, bacon, beans/cheese, salad and all their coffee you can take. I am on manzanilla (camomile) tea from now on. Well, after my instant TimHortons Decaf runs out...
Back to find they have a choice of room and we opt for the 2nd floor and two guys schlep our bags down there. We overlook nice patio with a pool and lots of shade, my afternoon destination in future! After the weekend, the hotel does not seem too busy at all.
Spent the morning finally getting stuff out of our suitcases. A nice big airy room with AC and fan will keep us comfortable. Til the power cut on Wednesday - but not for long...
This heat is debilitating, you can’t do much walking after about 1pm. Feels like southern Spain in May as I recall. The people here at the the hotel are wonderful, friendly, not much English but really obliging and helpful.
We find the local popular Chaya Maya restaurant where mama sits with a pile of masa making hand made tortillas fresh off the grill. Mmm. Everywhere serves lots of chips and little plates of tapas so you have be careful not to order too much other food. In this heat, we simply don’t want to eat much. Just drink beer! Usually about $4. A gorgeous seafood grill of red snapper, prawns, octopus, clams done in a banana leaf on an open grill with onion, tomato, mild chilis. Simply delicious.
On the way home we visit Oxxo , the local 7/11 type of place, and buy a cooler. But no ice! Tomorrow. Manyana..at least we can buy beer, fruit, etc. Now.
