Fort Myers FLA Feb 23
Half of the US is closed from the storms raging across so we feel fortunate to be down here, albeit 90 and very humid so the body is not converting to that very fast! Margaret’s ground floor apartment keeps cool and we put on AC if we need it - so it’s very comfortable if we don’t get too active.
Day 2 we got ambitious and walked about 3km round the local lake to the Wednesday Farmers market. A nice neighborhood collection of stalls and some lovely fruit/veg. We bought a huge papaya, mangos, baby bananas and I got a smoothie. But by the time we got back we were absolutely sweltered and I now have two blisters on my heels from not wearing sandals for 4 months! Off to the pool to wallow, the to the local Shrimp Shack for super seafood and local color. And into bed exhausted again.
We found out the Budweiser Clydesdale horses were in town (no free beer unfortunately) so took a drive to the local plaza to check them out. I guess we could see them at the Stampede probably too.
Feb 23: By day 3 we were beginning to skip the 10 hour sleep. And by Friday afternoon, one of Brent’s cousins from Cincinnatti joined us at the cute local Castle Minigolf (all done out like an English castle of course.) We returned about 3pm dripping, but fortunately not sunburned. After snacks, it was across the road to the pool, mostly quiet and friendly folks to wind down.
Then off to another super little local seafood dive, all very authentic, only half an hour wait (busy everywhere here as it’s inseason) and scrumptious seafood at the market/cafe. We had crab cakes, deep friend whole soft shell blue crab and a pile of fried and blackened shrimp. Well really prawns. Pretty much the speciality here. I bought 6 huge local prawns which, with the leftover shrimp, will make salad today. We were surprised to find the catfish was “imported”. Not sure from where, never thought the Chinese could do that!! The variety of fresh fish at the market there is wonderful too. Guess we have died and gone to seafood heaven here.
